Ok, it's raining here. For the 2nd time since I've been here. I had this image in my mind about what England would be like. I imagined it being dark and gloomy all of the time due to a lot of rain. Well, it's been sunny and nice outside 95% of the time that I've been here. Do they have a season here where it rains more than in other seasons? I'm ignorant when it comes to this countries culture and weather, etc...but I'm learning!! I had to write a paper in Ethics this weekend about cultural relativism. I've read a few articles about other culture's practices and I'm amazed at what some people do. Eskimos leave their dead elderly relatives behind to die because it will help the groups survival. The Eskimo women also practice infanticide. It's common among their culture for a woman to kill her newborn because it may effect the groups survival, or because there are not enough resources to take care of it. My whole paper was based upon my opinion of these different practices. I don't believe they are right, but this is their culture, their tradition. So, I'll hold my own beliefs about the morality of it, but I will also respect their culture and try not to judge them as people because they follow their traditions. My social life here isn't much of anything right now. I have some friends that I eat dinner with and talk to outside of class, but I'm so occupied by reading stuff for class or writing papers that I don't do much socializing. I miss doing that and I miss my friends at home. More and more everyday I miss them and wish that I will make more friends here so that I won't get homesick or whatever. Oh, I don't get on the internet much here, so if something major is going on in the forum or if there is something anyone wants to write me about, the producer has my new e-mail address, ask him to send it your way, or have my link changed at the bottom of the page. Ok, I'll write more later. courtney |
